Summary

Human eyelash length preference follows an inverted-U function across ethnicities, with an optimal length around one-third of eye width. Preferences showed a slight skew for Black women towards longer lashes.

Background:

Eyelashes protect eyes from environmental factors and can indicate health.
Previous research suggested an inverted-U function for eyelash length preference in White individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine if the inverted-U preference for eyelash length generalizes across ethnicities.
To investigate if ethnic background influences preferences for eyelash length.

Main Methods:

Men and women of Asian, Black, and White ethnicities rated the attractiveness of faces with varying eyelash lengths.
Eyelash lengths ranged from none to half the eye's width.

Main Results:

An inverted-U function for eyelash length preference was observed across all tested ethnicities (Asian, Black, White).
A general preference for eyelash length approximately one-third of eye width was supported.
A skew towards longer eyelash-to-eye-width ratios was noted for Black women's faces.

Conclusions:

Human preference for eyelash length appears to be a general, evolutionarily adaptive trait.
Ethnic background may subtly modulate this preference, particularly concerning Black women.
Further research is needed to understand the reasons behind the observed skew in preference for Black women.
