Relative Risk01:12

Relative Risk

208
Relative risk (RR) is a statistical measure commonly used in epidemiology to compare the likelihood of a particular event occurring between two groups. This metric is important for evaluating the relationship between exposure to a specific risk factor and the probability of a particular outcome. It plays a crucial role in medical research, public health studies, and risk assessment. Relative risk quantifies how much more (or less) likely an event is to occur in an exposed group compared to an...

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.0K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Types of Biopharmaceutical Studies: Controlled and Non-Controlled Approaches

147
Biopharmaceutical studies constitute a vital field aiming to enhance drug delivery methods and refine therapeutic approaches, drawing upon diverse interdisciplinary knowledge. In research methodologies, the choice between controlled and non-controlled studies significantly influences the study's reliability and accuracy.
Non-controlled studies, commonly employed for initial exploration, lack a control group, rendering them susceptible to biases and external influences. In contrast,...

Oppositional Defiant Disorder01:30

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

43
A persistent pattern of angry or irritable mood, defiant behavior, or vindictiveness characterizes Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Symptoms must occur over at least six months, involve interactions with individuals beyond siblings, and meet specific diagnostic criteria to be clinically significant. The disorder affects emotional regulation, social interactions, and behavior, often manifesting early in life and influencing long-term development and functioning.
Diagnostic Criteria and...

Relationship Formation02:12

Relationship Formation

40.1K
What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Censoring Survival Data01:09

Censoring Survival Data

125
Survival analysis is a statistical method used to analyze time-to-event data, often employed in fields such as medicine, engineering, and social sciences. One of the key challenges in survival analysis is dealing with incomplete data, a phenomenon known as "censoring." Censoring occurs when the event of interest (such as death, relapse, or system failure) has not occurred for some individuals by the end of the study period or is otherwise unobservable, and it might have many different...

Summary

Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) can limit firearm access for older adults. ERPOs are particularly relevant for elderly individuals with cognitive impairment, potentially reducing risks of suicide and violence.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Public Health
  • Criminology

Background:

  • Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) enable courts to restrict firearm access for individuals posing an imminent risk of harm.
  • Older adults face higher rates of suicide and dementia, yet ERPO utilization in this demographic is understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the use of ERPOs involving older adults (≥65 years).
  • To examine the role of cognitive impairment in ERPO cases among older adults.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of ERPO petitions in six US states through June 30, 2020.
  • Stratification of older adult respondents based on documented cognitive impairment.

Main Results:

  • 672 (10.0%) of 6,699 ERPO petitions were for older adults; 13.7% had cognitive impairment.
  • Cognitively impaired older adults were older and more likely to exhibit erratic behavior but less likely to have documented suicidality.
  • Over half of older adult respondents had documented firearm access at the time of the petition.

Conclusions:

  • About 14% of ERPO petitions for older adults involved cognitive impairment, with one-third noting suicide risk.
  • Further research on ERPO implementation can enhance awareness and inform usage for vulnerable older populations.
