Structural Joints: Cartilaginous Joints

2.3K
As the name indicates, at a cartilaginous joint, the adjacent bones are united by cartilage, a tough but flexible type of connective tissue. Unlike synovial joints, these types of joints lack a joint cavity and involve bones joined together by either hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage.
There are two types of cartilaginous joints:
Synchondrosis
A synchondrosis ("joined by cartilage") is a cartilaginous joint where bones are connected by hyaline cartilage. Synchondrosis may be temporary...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Acute traumatic thoracic disc herniation is rare. Delayed diagnosis after high-energy trauma can lead to permanent neurological deficits, underscoring the need for timely MRI in polytrauma patients.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Traumatology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Acute traumatic intervertebral disc herniation of the thoracic spine is an exceptionally rare injury.
  • This case highlights a 58-year-old male with high-energy trauma from a car accident leading to thoracic disc herniation.

Observation:

  • Initial CT scans revealed minimal bony trauma, leading to misattribution of neurological deficits (left upper limb paresis) to cranial injury.
  • Rapid progression of neurological symptoms from paraparesis to paraplegia prompted a spine MRI, revealing the traumatic disc herniation.

Findings:

  • Urgent spinal decompression was performed, but neurological function in the lower limbs was not restored.
  • This case underscores the diagnostic challenges and potential for permanent neurological damage due to delayed identification of thoracic spine injuries.

Implications:

  • The study advocates for considering MRI in polytrauma patients with CT-verified spine trauma to ensure early diagnosis of injuries like traumatic disc herniation.
  • Timely MRI can prevent irreversible neurological damage and improve patient outcomes in cases of acute spine trauma.
