Summary

Choroidal thickness (CT) is reduced in patients with type 2 diabetes and early diabetic nephropathy (DN) indicated by glomerular hyperfiltration. However, choroidal vascularity index (CVI) remains unchanged in these patients.

Background:

  • Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a common complication of type 2 diabetes (T2D).
  • Glomerular hyperfiltration is an early marker of DN.
  • Choroidal alterations may indicate systemic complications of diabetes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate changes in choroidal thickness (CT) and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) in T2D patients with glomerular hyperfiltration.
  • To assess CT and CVI as potential indicators of early DN.

Main Methods:

  • Compared 22 T2D patients with glomerular hyperfiltration (early DN) to 28 T2D patients without DN (NDN).
  • Excluded patients with diabetic retinopathy.
  • Measured subfoveal CT and CVI, and total CVI using spectral-domain enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography.

Main Results:

  • Choroidal thickness (CT) was significantly lower in the early DN group compared to the NDN group (p < 0.001).
  • No significant differences in total or subfoveal choroidal vascularity index (CVI) were observed between the groups (p > 0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Patients with T2D and glomerular hyperfiltration exhibit reduced choroidal thickness.
  • Choroidal vascularity index (CVI) does not differ between T2D patients with and without early diabetic nephropathy.
