DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Computed Tomography

4.6K
Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Area of Science:

  • Forensic Anthropology
  • Medical Imaging
  • Anatomy

Background:

  • Sex determination is crucial in forensic investigations and anthropological studies.
  • Maxillary sinuses, air-filled cavities in the skull, exhibit sexual dimorphism.
  • Computed tomography (CT) provides detailed anatomical data for analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the accuracy of gender identification using CT head and neck scans.
  • To assess the utility of volumetric analysis of the maxillary sinus for sex determination.
  • To investigate differences in maxillary sinus dimensions between sexes.

Main Methods:

  • CT scans of the head and neck were obtained for 50 participants (25 males, 25 females).
  • Linear measurements (width, length, height) and volume of the maxillary sinuses were calculated.
  • Statistical analysis compared measurements between genders.

Main Results:

  • Males exhibited significantly larger maxillary sinuses compared to females.
  • Consistent differences in sinus dimensions were observed, indicating potential for gender identification.

Conclusions:

  • Maxillary sinus dimensions derived from CT scans can accurately determine gender.
  • Volumetric analysis of the maxillary sinus is a reliable method for sex determination in forensic and anthropological contexts.
