    Summary

    Bacteriuria, or bacteria in urine, is more common in women with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). This risk increases with longer diabetes duration and the presence of diabetes complications.

    Background:

    • Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is a chronic condition affecting millions worldwide.
    • Urinary tract infections (UTIs), including bacteriuria, are a common concern in diabetic patients.
    • Understanding risk factors for bacteriuria in NIDDM is crucial for effective patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of bacteriuria in patients with NIDDM.
    • To identify potential risk factors associated with bacteriuria in this population, including glycemic control and diabetes duration.

    Main Methods:

    • Clean-catch urine cultures and hemoglobin A1 (HbA1) measurements were performed.
    • 752 patients with NIDDM (411 men, 341 women) were included.
    • Prevalence was compared between diabetic patients and controls, and risk factors were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Bacteriuria prevalence was significantly higher in women with NIDDM (9.1%) compared to controls (5.0%).
    • No significant difference in bacteriuria prevalence was observed in men with NIDDM.
    • Bacteriuria risk was not correlated with HbA1 levels but was associated with longer diabetes duration and the presence of diabetes complications.

    Conclusions:

    • Women with NIDDM have an increased risk of bacteriuria.
    • Longer diabetes duration and complications are significant risk factors for bacteriuria in NIDDM patients.
    • Routine screening for bacteriuria may be warranted in NIDDM patients, particularly women with long-standing disease and complications.
