Color Vision01:24

Color Vision

611
Color perception begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Two main theories explain how colors are seen: the trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory. The trichromatic theory, proposed by Thomas Young in 1802 and extended by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1852, suggests that color vision is based on three types of cone receptors in the retina. These cones are sensitive to different but overlapping ranges of wavelengths corresponding to red, blue, and green.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Genetics
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Congenital achromatopsia is a rare inherited retinal disorder.
  • It results in significantly reduced visual acuity and complete absence of colour vision.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of gene therapy in restoring colour vision.
  • To assess behavioural changes in patients undergoing treatment.

Main Methods:

  • The study involved a series of carefully designed behavioural experiments.
  • These experiments specifically targeted the assessment of colour vision capabilities.

Main Results:

  • Preliminary results indicate potential improvements in colour perception.
  • Further data analysis is ongoing to confirm the extent of vision restoration.

Conclusions:

  • Gene therapy presents a potential therapeutic avenue for congenital achromatopsia.
  • Behavioural assessments are crucial for quantifying treatment outcomes.
