Summary

Bioabsorbable magnesium screws offer faster bone healing in hallux valgus surgery compared to titanium. Despite higher hardware failure rates, magnesium screws lead to comparable patient outcomes and avoid reoperation for hardware removal.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Podiatric Medicine

Background:

  • Bioabsorbable magnesium (Mg) screws represent a novel fixation option in foot surgery.
  • The comparative efficacy of Mg screws versus traditional titanium screws remains underexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of bioabsorbable Mg screws and titanium screws in hallux valgus corrective surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective case series of 60 patients undergoing hallux valgus surgery.
  • Patients were randomized to receive either Mg screws or titanium screws.
  • Clinical outcomes assessed via AOFAS hallux valgus score, VAS, PGIC, and IF5C; radiographic assessment included angular measurements and union time.

Main Results:

  • Faster osteotomy healing observed in the Mg group.
  • Higher hardware failure rate in the Mg group (5/26) compared to the titanium group (0/34).
  • No significant difference in AOFAS and PGIC scores at 6 months; similar radiographic outcomes at 1 year.

Conclusions:

  • Bioabsorbable Mg screws provide comparable clinical and radiographic outcomes to titanium screws in hallux valgus surgery.
  • Accelerated osteotomy union with Mg screws compensates for increased hardware failure, leading to patient satisfaction and reduced need for hardware removal surgery.
