Summary

Background:

The Texas Developmental Center for AIDS Research (D-CFAR) established the CFAR Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Pathway Initiative (CDEIPI) in 2021.
The CDEIPI aims to engage high school and graduate students from Underrepresented Minority/Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the impact of the CDEIPI program on high school students' interest in science and research careers.
To evaluate the program's effectiveness in increasing knowledge of HIV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 research.

Main Methods:

Partnered with two Texas high schools serving predominantly economically disadvantaged and minority students.
Delivered research and career path presentations on HIV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 to 370 high school students during the 2021-2022 academic year.
Administered anonymous surveys to gauge student interest in research degrees and careers post-participation.

Main Results:

Participants reported enhanced knowledge of science content related to HIV-1 and SARS-CoV-2.
Student learners showed increased interest in research careers, specifically in HIV-1 research, following program sessions.
The initiative successfully engaged students from diverse backgrounds in scientific exploration.

Conclusions:

The Texas D-CFAR CDEIPI programming has demonstrated significant interest among student learners.
Future iterations of the CDEIPI program are planned to further build upon its success and expand its reach.
