Dielectric Polarization in a Capacitor01:31

Dielectric Polarization in a Capacitor

4.8K
The presence of a dielectric medium in a capacitor not only changes the voltage and capacitance but also affects the electric field. In general, dielectrics can be of two types: polar and nonpolar. In a polar dielectric, the positive and negative charges in the molecules are separated by a distance and hence have a permanent dipole moment. In contrast, no such charge separation exists in a nonpolar dielectric, however the nonpolar molecules get polarized in the presence of an external electric...

    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Photonics
    • Materials Science
    • Electromagnetics

    Background:

    • Terahertz (THz) frequency range presents unique challenges for polarization control.
    • Conventional reflective polarization converters often have fixed, non-tunable responses.
    • Liquid crystals (LCs) offer a promising platform for dynamic optical manipulation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To design and demonstrate an electrically controllable reflective broadband linear polarization (LP) converter.
    • To achieve efficient cross-polarization conversion (CPC) in the terahertz range.
    • To enable dynamic control over polarization states via voltage biasing.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized a novel structure incorporating nematic liquid crystals (LCs).
    • Employed voltage bias switching to re-orient LC molecules.
    • Simulated and experimentally validated the device performance in the THz frequency range.

    Main Results:

    • Achieved a high polarization conversion ratio (PCR) > 0.9.
    • Demonstrated broadband operation from 236.8 to 269.6 GHz.
    • Showcased dynamic control of cross-polarized and co-polarized reflected waves by switching LC states.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed electrically controllable LC-based LP converter offers tunable CPC in the THz range.
    • Dynamic control surpasses limitations of fixed-response converters.
    • Significant potential for applications in THz imaging and optical communications.
