Relationship Formation02:12

Relationship Formation

40.1K
What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Social Exchange Theory02:06

Social Exchange Theory

34.6K
We have discussed why we form relationships, what attracts us to others, and different types of love. But what determines whether we are satisfied with and stay in a relationship? One theory that provides an explanation is social exchange theory. According to social exchange theory, we act as naïve economists in keeping a tally of the ratio of costs and benefits of forming and maintaining a relationship with others (Rusbult & Van Lange, 2003).

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia

107
Schizophrenia, a complex psychiatric disorder, has been historically misunderstood. Early psychological theories attributed its origins to childhood trauma and unresponsive parenting. However, contemporary research largely rejects these notions, favoring the vulnerability-stress hypothesis. This model proposes that individuals with a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia may develop the disorder following exposure to significant environmental stressors. Notably, studies on high-risk...

Factors Affecting Perception01:25

Factors Affecting Perception

1.6K
Perception is influenced by perceptual set, context, motivation, and emotion. Perceptual set, or perceptual expectancy, refers to the tendency to perceive things in a particular way, influenced by previous experiences and expectations. This phenomenon affects the interpretation of stimuli, creating a set of mental tendencies and assumptions that impact sensory perceptions of sound, taste, touch, and sight.
An illustrative example of a perceptual set is the scenario where an airline pilot told...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health issue.
  • Understanding the longitudinal impact of IPV on relationship satisfaction is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine how temporal changes in intimate partner violence (IPV) affect romantic relationship satisfaction.
  • To investigate potential gender differences in the impact of IPV dynamics on relationship quality.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal analysis of data from 8,279 young adults.
  • Utilized data from Waves III and IV of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health).
  • Examined associations between changes in IPV victimization/perpetration and relationship satisfaction.

Main Results:

  • Greater temporal increases in IPV victimization were associated with lower relationship satisfaction for both men and women.
  • Increases in IPV perpetration were not significantly associated with satisfaction for men.
  • For women, increased IPV perpetration was linked to higher relationship satisfaction.

Conclusions:

  • Temporal dynamics of IPV significantly influence relationship satisfaction.
  • The impact of IPV perpetration on relationship satisfaction differs between genders.
  • Findings highlight the complex interplay between IPV, relationship satisfaction, and gender.
