    Summary

    A 10-month-old dog experienced acute renal failure after ingesting ibuprofen. Prompt fluid therapy led to recovery, but complete reversal of kidney dysfunction is not guaranteed with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug toxicity.

    • A 10-month-old dog presented with vomiting, melena, and acute renal failure.
    • The clinical signs followed the ingestion of ten 600-mg ibuprofen tablets.

    Findings:

    • Intravenous fluid therapy for 5 days resulted in resolution of clinical signs.
    • Azotemia decreased following treatment, indicating improved kidney function.
    • Complete reversal of renal dysfunction may not always occur.

    Implications:

    • Veterinarians should be aware of potential NSAID toxicity, especially with ibuprofen.
    • Early and aggressive fluid therapy is crucial for managing acute renal failure in dogs.
    • Prognosis for recovery is generally good, but long-term renal function should be monitored.
