An Agent-First Preference in a Patient-First Language During Sentence Comprehension

The brain’s language system may have a built-in agent-first bias, but this tendency is influenced by language experience. Human referents show a strong agent bias, while nonhuman referents’ bias can be altered by usage frequency.
