Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. They suggested that the vocabulary and structure of a language influence how its speakers think and perceive reality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the association between multi-element exposure, particularly selenium (Se), and cognitive function in rural elderly individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 416 elderly individuals (≥60 years) in Enshi county, China.
  • Measurement of whole blood element concentrations (Se, Cu, Fe, Zn, Ca, Mg, Cd, As, Pb) using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS).
  • Assessment of cognitive function via nine standard tests and statistical analysis using LASSO, ANCOVA, and GLM.

  • Higher Se and Cu levels correlated with better cognitive function.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated selenium and copper levels are beneficial for cognitive function in the elderly.
  • Selenium plays a protective role, counteracting the detrimental effects of calcium on cognition.
  • These findings highlight the importance of trace element status for maintaining cognitive health in aging rural populations.
