Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically evaluate and compare the accuracy, fit, and clinical outcomes of inlay, onlay, overlay, and one-piece endodontic crown restorations fabricated using both digital and conventional workflows.
  • This review aims to provide evidence-based insights into the performance of digital and conventional dental manufacturing processes.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review adhering to PRISMA guidelines, registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021258696).
  • Included studies were identified from five databases (searched November 2022) evaluating accuracy, fit, and clinical outcomes of specified restorations from digital and conventional workflows.
  • Risk of bias was assessed using the ROB 2 and CRIS checklists.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-three studies were included, assessing various parameters including marginal/internal fit (16 studies), accuracy (5 studies), fracture resistance (3 studies), and clinical performance (1 study).
  • While most studies reported clinically acceptable outcomes for both digital and conventional workflows, a slight divergence was noted: 11 studies favored conventional, 10 favored digital, and 2 found similar outcomes.
  • No significant difference in overall clinical acceptability was found between the two workflows.

Conclusions:

  • Both digital and conventional workflows yield clinically acceptable results for the evaluated parameters in partial-coverage restorations.
  • The study did not reach a consensus on whether digital or conventional workflows are more efficient or superior for all aspects of partial-coverage restoration fabrication.
  • Further research may be needed to establish definitive advantages of one workflow over the other.
