    This study found that antistaphylococcal immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies are present in a significant portion of patients with atopic dermatitis. Higher levels of these antibodies correlate with more severe disease in both children and adults.

    Background:

    • Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
    • Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) colonization is common in AD patients.
    • The role of specific immune responses to S. aureus in AD pathogenesis is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of antistaphylococcal IgE antibodies in adults and children with atopic dermatitis.
    • To determine the association between antistaphylococcal IgE antibodies and disease severity, clinical characteristics, and other immune responses in AD patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples from 60 adults and 64 children with atopic dermatitis were analyzed.
    • Radioallergosorbent test (RAST) discs coupled to cellular proteins from S. aureus (Wood 46 strain) were used to detect antistaphylococcal IgE antibodies.
    • Disease severity, cutaneous S. aureus infections, total serum IgE levels, specific IgE responses to food allergens, and helper T cell percentages were assessed.

    Main Results:

    • Antistaphylococcal IgE antibodies were detected in 29.6% of children and 23.3% of adults with AD.
    • In adults, the presence of anti-S. aureus IgE antibodies was associated with more severe and prolonged disease.
    • In children, anti-S. aureus IgE antibodies correlated with more severe and extensive disease, increased S. aureus skin infections, higher total IgE levels, heightened IgE responses to food allergens, and a greater percentage of helper T cells.

    Conclusions:

    • Antistaphylococcal IgE antibodies are prevalent in patients with atopic dermatitis.
    • The presence of these antibodies is linked to more severe AD and specific immunological characteristics, suggesting a role in disease exacerbation.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the clinical implications and therapeutic potential related to anti-S. aureus IgE responses in atopic dermatitis.
