Anastomoses01:19

Anastomoses

856
In human anatomy, anastomosis refers to a connection or opening between two things, particularly between blood vessels or other tubular structures. The term is derived from the Greek term 'anastomosis,' which means 'outlet' or 'opening.' This natural network of connections plays a critical role in the survival and functionality of the human body.
Anastomoses can be formed at arterial, venous, and lymphatic vessels.
Arterial Anastomosis: These occur between arteries. They...

DefinitionRenal angiography, also known as renal arteriography, is an imaging technique used to obtain a comprehensive view of blood flow and the vascular structure of blood vessels in the kidneys and surrounding areas.PurposeRenal angiography detects blood vessel abnormalities in the kidneys, such as aneurysms, stenosis, thrombosis, vascular tumors, and renal artery stenosis. It evaluates kidney function and guides interventional treatments like angioplasty or stent placement.Pre-Procedure...

Aneurysm III: Interprofessional Care

Aneurysm management involves either conservative medical therapy or surgical intervention, depending on the size and symptoms of the aneurysm. Conservative management is generally reserved for smaller, asymptomatic aneurysms, while larger or symptomatic aneurysms often necessitate surgical repair.Conservative Medical TherapyFor small, asymptomatic aneurysms, particularly abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) less than 5.5 centimeters in diameter, conservative medical therapy is recommended. This...

Hemodialysis I: Introduction

51
Hemodialysis (HD) is a medical treatment that artificially removes waste products, excess fluids, and toxins from the blood when the kidneys are no longer able to perform these functions effectively. In this process, blood is filtered through a semipermeable membrane, allowing for the selective removal of waste while preserving necessary components like blood cells and proteins. Hemodialysis is typically performed in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or severe kidney...

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Tumors
  • Oncology
  • Nephrology

Background:

  • Anastomosing haemangioma is a rare benign vascular tumor.
  • It is often misdiagnosed due to histological similarity to malignant neoplasms.
  • This can lead to unnecessary radical treatments.

Observation:

  • A case of an asymptomatic male patient with a slight increase in kidney function is presented.
  • Initial investigations including ultrasound and CT scan suggested renal cell carcinoma.
  • The patient underwent a laparoscopic radical nephrectomy.

Findings:

  • Histological analysis confirmed the resected mass as an anastomosing haemangioma.
  • The patient remains asymptomatic with no signs of recurrence or disease progression post-surgery.
  • A comprehensive literature review on anastomosing haemangioma is also provided.

Implications:

  • Accurate diagnosis of anastomosing haemangioma is crucial to prevent overtreatment.
  • This case underscores the importance of detailed histopathological examination in renal masses.
  • Further research into the diagnostic criteria and management of this rare tumor is warranted.
