[Osmotic homeostasis in the freshwater ameba]

Structural and physiological osmotic adaptations of freshwater protozoa are reviewed using Amoeba proteus as an example. A particular emphasis is given to the contractile vacuole. Recent results on the effects of exogenous ATP and vasopressin on the contractile vacuole are also presented.
