Background:

  • Spine-pelvis-lower extremity pathologies can disrupt global postural balance.
  • Compensatory alterations in adjacent body segments may occur due to localized pathology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare pelvic movements in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) versus those who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
  • To assess differences in pelvic motion and gait parameters between KOA, TKA, and healthy control groups.

Main Methods:

  • 84 participants: 31 TKA, 28 KOA, 25 healthy controls.
  • Exclusion criteria: neurological disease, mobility impairment, prior lower limb surgery.
  • Wireless tri-axial accelerometer used to assess pelvic movements (tilt, rotation, obliquity) and gait parameters (velocity, cadence, stride length).

Main Results:

  • TKA and control groups showed decreased pelvic tilt and oblique range compared to the KOA group.
  • Both KOA and TKA groups exhibited significantly lower gait velocity and stride length than the control group.

Conclusions:

  • Total knee arthroplasty influences pelvic movements.
  • Surgical correction of frontal and sagittal plane alignment in TKA likely alters pelvic dynamics.
