Bonding and Strength of Aggregate01:12

Bonding and Strength of Aggregate

216
The bond between aggregate particles and the cement matrix is significantly influenced by the shape and surface texture of the aggregates. High-strength concretes benefit from a rougher texture, which leads to stronger bonding due to greater adhesion. Angular aggregates with larger surface areas also enhance this bond. The bonding quality, however, is complex to assess as no universally accepted test exists. Good bonding is indicated when a crushed concrete specimen shows some aggregate...

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Biomaterials Engineering
  • Caries Research

Background:

  • Secondary caries is a primary cause of dental restoration failure.
  • Limited research exists on creating acid-resistant and antibacterial dentin to enhance bonding.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effects of two fluoride etchants on dentin bonding.
  • To explore altering dentin substrate for improved bonding using fluoride etchants.

Main Methods:

  • Formulated NaF- and SnF2-containing etchants with 35% phosphoric acid.
  • Evaluated dentin using SEM, EDS, FTIR, microhardness, antierosion, and antibacterial tests.
  • Measured microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and analyzed fracture modes.

Main Results:

  • SnF2 etchants promoted remineralization and mineral formation on dentin.
  • The SnF2-containing group S1 exhibited the highest µTBS (77.5 MPa).
  • Group S2 showed superior antierosion and antibacterial properties.

Conclusions:

  • SnF2-containing etchants improve dentin substrate, remineralization, and bonding strength.
  • SnF2 enhances antibacterial ability and acid erosion resistance compared to NaF etchants.
