Periorbital myectomy for essential blepharospasm.

M Bettez, P Lavertu

    The Journal of Otolaryngology
    |October 1, 1986
    PubMed
    Summary

Essential blepharospasm, a form of Meige syndrome, often has poor treatment outcomes. A novel periorbital myectomy technique was applied to a patient, offering potential for improved long-term results in blepharospasm management.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Ophthalmology

    Background:

    • Essential blepharospasm is a focal dystonia often considered a variant of Meige syndrome.
    • Current treatments for essential blepharospasm have demonstrated limited long-term efficacy.

    Observation:

    • A patient with essential blepharospasm was treated with a recently described periorbital myectomy technique.
    • This surgical approach targets the muscles around the eye.

    Findings:

    • The periorbital myectomy was successfully applied in this case.
    • This technique represents a novel surgical option for essential blepharospasm.

    Implications:

    • Periorbital myectomy may offer a more effective long-term solution for essential blepharospasm.
    • Further research is warranted to evaluate the broader applicability and success rates of this technique.
