    Area of Science:

    • Adolescent Psychology
    • Social Psychiatry
    • Educational Psychology

    Background:

    • School refusal is a significant social issue affecting adolescents, families, and educational systems globally.
    • Understanding the underlying mentality of students regarding school attendance is crucial for addressing this problem.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the mentality of junior high school students concerning school attendance.
    • To identify latent school refusal among students and explore contributing factors.

    Main Methods:

    • A questionnaire survey was administered to 838 junior high school students (429 boys, 409 girls) across seven public schools.
    • Latent school refusal was defined by affirmative responses to three specific items based on clinical experience.
    • Factors related to school, family, and daily activities were considered.

    Main Results:

    • 117 students (14.0%) were identified as latent school refusers, exhibiting a mentality characteristic of school refusal despite regular attendance.
    • A significant proportion of students (14.0%) were identified as having the potential to become dropouts.
    • Gender distribution showed 65 boys and 52 girls among latent school refusers.

    Conclusions:

    • A considerable number of students attend school with a mentality indicative of school refusal and potential dropout risk.
    • Clinicians and educators must recognize the social context influencing adolescent mental health.
    • Interventions are needed to promote the healthy development of adolescents facing school-related challenges.
