Tofacitinib, a targeted synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug, can cause rare side effects like weight gain. This study reports six cases of tofacitinib-induced weight gain in patients with inflammatory conditions.
Area of Science:
- Rheumatology
- Pharmacology
- Immunology
Background:
- Targeted synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (tsDMARDs) are novel oral treatments for inflammatory diseases.
- Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, like tofacitinib, represent a class of tsDMARDs.
- While effective, tsDMARDs carry risks of infections and other adverse events.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report on a rare side effect associated with tofacitinib use.
- To document cases of weight gain observed in patients treated with tofacitinib.
Main Methods:
- Case series reporting.
- Review of patient data for individuals experiencing adverse effects.
Main Results:
- Six cases of tofacitinib-induced weight gain were identified.
- The affected patients had conditions including ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and vasculitis.
Conclusions:
- Weight gain is a potential rare side effect of tofacitinib.
- Clinicians should monitor for weight changes in patients receiving tofacitinib therapy.
