Minimal moisture content for growth and aflatoxin production by Aspergillus parasiticus in mixed feeds
Mycopathologia
|September 1, 1986
Abstract:
Minimal moisture content for growth and aflatoxin production by Aspergillus parasiticus in mixed feeds was studied. Minimal moisture content for growth is 16.51% +/- 0.45. Very low amounts of aflatoxins are accumulated at days 1 or 2 after the growth started when the initial moisture content of the mixed feed was 17% or lower; on the other hand, significant amounts of aflatoxin are detected when it was 18% or higher.
Insights
Minimal moisture for Aspergillus parasiticus growth in feed is 16.51%. Aflatoxin production significantly increases at 18% moisture, posing a food safety risk.
Area of Science:
- Food Science
- Mycology
- Microbiology
Background:
- Aspergillus parasiticus contamination of feed poses a significant risk.
- Understanding the optimal conditions for fungal growth and toxin production is crucial for feed safety.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the minimal moisture content required for Aspergillus parasiticus growth in mixed feeds.
- To investigate the relationship between initial moisture content and aflatoxin accumulation.
Main Methods:
- Mixed feeds were incubated under controlled conditions.
- Moisture content was monitored.
- Aflatoxin levels were quantified over time.
Main Results:
- The minimal moisture content for Aspergillus parasiticus growth was determined to be 16.51% ± 0.45%.
- Low levels of aflatoxins were detected within 1-2 days at moisture content of 17% or lower.
- Significant aflatoxin accumulation was observed when initial moisture content was 18% or higher.
Conclusions:
- Feed moisture content is a critical factor influencing Aspergillus parasiticus growth and aflatoxin production.
- Maintaining feed moisture below 17% can mitigate early aflatoxin contamination.
- Higher moisture levels (≥18%) promote substantial aflatoxin accumulation, increasing food safety concerns.
