Summary
We report the first hyperpolarizability of carbonaceous nanoparticles (CNPs) using second harmonic light scattering. Lysozyme protein adsorption on CNPs was also investigated, revealing physisorption and endothermic, entropically driven binding.
Area of Science:
- Nonlinear optics
- Nanomaterials science
- Biophysics
Background:
- Carbonaceous nanoparticles (CNPs) are emerging materials with potential applications in therapeutics.
- Understanding their optical properties and biomolecular interactions is crucial for safe and effective use.
- Second Harmonic Light Scattering (SHLS) is a sensitive technique for probing molecular properties and surface interactions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the first hyperpolarizability (β) of CNPs of varying sizes.
- To investigate the adsorption behavior of Lysozyme (Lyz) protein on CNPs.
- To characterize the thermodynamic parameters of Lyz-CNP interactions.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis and characterization of 15 nm and 35 nm CNPs.
- Measurement of hyperpolarizability (β) using SHLS.
- Protein adsorption studies using SHLS and fitting to the modified Langmuir adsorption model (MLM).
- Temperature-dependent SHLS measurements to determine thermodynamic parameters.
Main Results:
- CNPs exhibit significant hyperpolarizability (β), exceeding organic molecules but lower than plasmonic nanoparticles.
- Lysozyme (Lyz) was found to physisorb on CNPs, forming less than a monolayer.
- Adsorption is an endothermic and entropically driven process, characterized by specific binding constants and free energy changes.
Conclusions:
- CNPs possess notable nonlinear optical properties relevant for photonic applications.
- SHLS is effective in characterizing protein adsorption on nanomaterials.
- The findings provide insights into the safe design of CNP-based drug delivery systems and biocompatible nanomaterials.
