Background:

Cooperation is fundamental to social interactions.
Facial expressions play a crucial role in interpersonal dynamics.
Understanding how facial regulation impacts cooperation is vital.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the interpersonal effects of regulating naturalistic facial signals on cooperation.
To examine how facial activity and regulation influence behavior in a dyadic context.
To explore the role of perceived facial regulation in fostering cooperation.

Main Methods:

Fifty pairs of participants engaged in an iterative Prisoner's Dilemma (IPD) game over ten rounds via video link.
Facial activity was auto-coded using iMotions software following each round's outcome.
Video-cued recall (VCR) assessed self-reported and perceived facial regulation; two-level mixed-effects logistic regression analyzed cooperation predictors.

Main Results:

Participants were less likely to cooperate after a partner's previous defection.
Auto-coded facial activity did not significantly predict subsequent cooperation.
Partner's positive facial expression regulation and the actor's perception of it significantly increased cooperation.

Conclusions:

Perceived positive facial regulation by a partner enhances cooperation, even after defection.
Dynamic dyadic emotional processes can be systematically studied in controlled interactive settings.
Findings suggest interpersonal effects of facial regulation are significant in cooperative contexts.
