Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Endodontics
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Removing intra-radicular posts, especially fiber posts, during endodontic retreatment presents significant clinical challenges.
  • Conventional freehand post removal techniques are operator-dependent, time-consuming, and carry risks of iatrogenic damage.

Observation:

  • A fractured fiber post within a root canal complicated endodontic retreatment, leading to a periapical lesion.
  • An endodontic static guide, 3D-printed for precision, was employed for the removal of the fractured fiber post.

Findings:

  • The use of the endodontic static guide successfully facilitated the removal of the fractured fiber post, enabling the saving of the compromised tooth.
  • Potential sources of error during both the construction phase and clinical application of the 3D-printed static guide were identified and described.

Implications:

  • 3D-printed static guides offer a potentially more predictable and less invasive alternative for fiber post removal in endodontic retreatment.
  • Careful adherence to all procedural steps during guide fabrication and clinical use is crucial to prevent complications and ensure successful outcomes.
