Hand infections--the academic surgeon's perspective. 2. A rundown of various causes
Abstract:
A large number of organisms can cause infections of the hand, and they can enter the body in a number of ways--in animal or human bites, in punctures, by direct inoculation, or through the bloodstream, intravenous needles, or prosthetic implantation procedures. In addition, all types of scratches and abrasions can become contaminated--by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and a wide variety of marine organisms. When the body's defenses are impaired by disease or other factors, the organisms are more likely to take hold. Treatment depends on the organism involved and the extent of infection, but proper wound care and aseptic technique are paramount in all cases.
Insights
Hand infections can result from various organisms entering through bites, punctures, or contaminated wounds. Proper wound care and aseptic techniques are crucial for treatment, depending on the specific pathogen and infection severity.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Microbiology
- Wound Care
Background:
- The hand is susceptible to infections from diverse microorganisms.
- Infection entry points include bites, punctures, abrasions, and medical procedures.
- Impaired host defenses increase susceptibility to infection.
Purpose of the Study:
- To summarize the common causes and routes of hand infections.
- To highlight the importance of wound care and aseptic techniques in managing hand infections.
Main Methods:
- Review of common pathogens causing hand infections.
- Analysis of infection transmission routes.
- Emphasis on diagnostic and treatment principles.
Main Results:
- Organisms responsible for hand infections include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and marine organisms.
- Infection can occur via animal/human bites, punctures, direct inoculation, bloodstream, and contaminated wounds.
- Severity and treatment are organism- and extent-dependent.
Conclusions:
- Effective management of hand infections relies on identifying the causative organism and infection extent.
- Aseptic technique and meticulous wound care are fundamental to preventing and treating hand infections.
