- Trauma Studies
- Sociology
Background:
- Lebanon faced a severe economic crisis, COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2020 Beirut port explosion.
- These concurrent crises created a high-stress environment for the population.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the link between the number of impactful community events and mental health outcomes.
- To explore the protective roles of social support, resilience, and religious coping.
Main Methods:
- Online survey of 406 Lebanese adults (18-64 years) in February 2021.
- Utilized validated self-report measures for anxiety, depression, PTSD, social support, resilience, and religious coping.
Main Results:
- Over half of participants reported moderate to severe anxiety, depression, and probable PTSD.
- Experiencing all three major events increased PTSD likelihood by 47%.
- Resilience was the strongest protective factor; negative religious coping and being female predicted higher PTSD scores.
Conclusions:
- Elevated mental health issues were prevalent in the Lebanese sample.
- Resilience is a key factor in mitigating trauma impact, while negative religious coping and female gender are risk factors for PTSD.
