    Summary

    Background:

    • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in children and adults.
    • Antimicrobial resistance is a growing global health concern.
    • High antibiotic consumption has been linked to increased resistance rates.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of common urinary tract pathogens in Kuwait.
    • To investigate the prevalence of resistance to frequently prescribed antibiotics.

    Main Methods:

    • Agar diffusion method was used to test sensitivity of 1253 urinary tract isolates.
    • Isolates were tested against 13 commonly used antimicrobial agents.
    • Data collected over a 9-month period (April-December 1984).

    Main Results:

    • Escherichia coli exhibited high resistance to ampicillin, sulphonamide, and trimethoprim/sulphamethoxazole.
    • Proteus species showed significant resistance to ampicillin.
    • Elevated resistance levels were noted for key UTI pathogens.

    Conclusions:

    • High rates of antimicrobial resistance in UTIs were identified in Kuwait.
    • Extensive use of antibiotics, especially ampicillin, is a likely contributing factor.
    • This highlights the need for judicious antibiotic prescribing practices.
