Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder01:30

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

85
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings....

Summary

Adults with episodic migraine show higher rates of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and impulsivity. This finding suggests a potential link between migraine and ADHD that warrants clinical consideration.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Existing research indicates a higher incidence of migraine in individuals with ADHD.
  • Less evidence explores the converse relationship: whether migraine patients exhibit increased ADHD prevalence.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and impulsivity in patients experiencing episodic migraine.

Main Methods:

  • An observational cohort study design was employed.
  • Participants diagnosed with episodic migraine were included in the study.
  • Standardized scales, including the ADHD Rating Scale, Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale, and Plutchik's Impulsivity Scale, were utilized for assessment.

Main Results:

  • Patients with episodic migraine demonstrated significantly higher mean scores for inattention (5 vs. 2.7, p < .00001), hyperactivity (4 vs. 2.5, p = .000621), and impulsivity (2 vs. 1.1, p = .000407) compared to controls.

Conclusions:

  • Adults with migraine exhibit a greater prevalence of ADHD symptoms.
  • These findings underscore the importance of considering ADHD symptoms during the clinical assessment of migraine patients.
