Effects of EDTA on End-Point Detection Methods

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare L*a*b* values of VITA Classical (VC) and VITA Toothguide 3D-MASTER (VM) dental shade guides.
  • To evaluate color differences using SpectroShade (SS) and eLAB digital methods.
  • To assess the intra- and inter-device reliability of these digital color assessment tools.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-four measurements per shade tab were taken by one operator across three batches of VC and VM guides.
  • Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated to assess reliability between batches.
  • L*a*b* values and color differences (ΔE₀₀) were analyzed using independent t-tests (α = 0.05).

Main Results:

  • Excellent ICC values were found between batches for all L*a*b* components, except for the 'a*' component in eLAB.
  • Statistically significant differences were observed between the SS and eLAB methods for most L*a*b* values.
  • Intra-device mean ΔE₀₀ was low (0.5-1.1), indicating good internal consistency.
  • Inter-device mean ΔE₀₀ was high (4.9-5.0), indicating significant variability between methods.

Conclusions:

  • Both SpectroShade and eLAB demonstrate good internal consistency and reliability within devices.
  • Significant variability exists between the SpectroShade and eLAB methods, particularly for the 'a*' component.
  • Clinicians must consider the potential for method-related color discrepancies when using these digital tools for shade selection.
