Summary

Ichthyosis patients often have dry eye disease and corneal irregularities. Early screening for these ocular surface and anterior segment abnormalities is crucial for timely management.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe ocular surface and anterior eye segment findings in patients with different types of ichthyoses.
  • To identify characteristic ocular abnormalities associated with ichthyosis.
  • To evaluate the utility of multimodal imaging in detecting preclinical ocular changes.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational study at a single center.
  • Inclusion of five patients (13-66 years) with ichthyosis.
  • Utilized multimodal imaging: slit-lamp examination, swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), and in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM).

  • All patients presented with moderate-to-severe dry eye disease (DED).
  • Significant corneal irregularity was observed, with notable differences in corneal thickness measurements (CAT vs. CTT > 375 µm).

Conclusions:

  • Multimodal imaging effectively detects preclinical ocular abnormalities in ichthyosis patients.
  • Characteristic corneal changes, including ectasia and DED, are prevalent.
  • Routine ophthalmological examination for DED and ectatic disorders is recommended for early detection in ichthyosis patients.
