Inflammatory markers in geriatric anemia: A study from North India

Geriatric anemia is often linked to inflammation, with 94.7% of patients showing raised inflammatory markers. Aging itself appears to be a pro-inflammatory state, contributing to anemia development.

- Seventy-five anemic geriatric patients were assessed.
- Serum levels of high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-8 (IL-8) were measured.
- Serum ferritin (SF) levels were also evaluated.

- Elevated inflammatory markers were observed in 94.7% of anemic geriatric patients.
- Interleukin-8 (IL-8) was the most frequently elevated marker, followed by TNF-α, IL-6, hsCRP, and SF.
- No distinct inflammatory profile differentiated ACD from UA.

- A hyperinflammatory profile is common in geriatric anemia, regardless of the specific cause.
- Aging may inherently be a pro-inflammatory state contributing to anemia.
- Geriatric anemia likely develops from subclinical inflammation combined with nutritional deficiencies or chronic diseases.
