Area of Science:

  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Dental Public Health
  • Oral Health Assessment

Background:

  • Improving elderly oral health is vital for overall well-being and quality of life.
  • Comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment planning are essential for geriatric care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a comprehensive Oral Health Assessment Tool specifically for the geriatric population.

Main Methods:

  • Expert consultation led to the creation of a clinical form and self-assessment questionnaire covering eight oral health domains.
  • A pilot study involving 84 nursing home residents assessed the tool's validity, reliability, sensitivity, and specificity.

Main Results:

  • The tool demonstrated high sensitivity for remaining teeth (97%) and decayed teeth (88%).
  • Questions on periodontitis and gingivitis showed excellent specificity (100%).

Conclusions:

  • A Comprehensive Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Tool has been developed and validated in a pilot study.
  • Further evaluation in larger studies is recommended to confirm its utility.
