Summary

This study found no evidence that allergic rhinitis (AR) causally increases the risk of common cancers. Mendelian randomization analysis suggests AR does not significantly impact cancer development in the European population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential causal role of allergic rhinitis in cancer development.
  • Utilizing Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore the AR-cancer association.

Main Methods:

  • A two-sample MR analysis was conducted using genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data.
  • Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with AR served as instrumental variables.
  • Multiple MR methods and sensitivity analyses (heterogeneity, pleiotropy, leave-one-out) were employed for robustness.

Main Results:

  • MR analysis revealed no statistically significant causal relationship between AR and the examined cancers (p > 0.05).
  • Consistent results were observed across five different analytical approaches.
  • Sensitivity analyses indicated no significant heterogeneity, horizontal pleiotropy, or influence from individual SNPs.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides no evidence for a substantial causal impact of AR on the risk of eight common cancers in Europeans.
  • A very minor effect of AR on cancer risk cannot be entirely excluded.
  • Further large-scale research is warranted to validate these findings.
