Purpose of the Study:

  • To classify pediatric COVID-19 hospitalizations by admission reason: "for COVID-19" or "with COVID-19".
  • To compare disease severity and patient age between the Delta and Omicron variant predominant periods.
  • To analyze the association between variant type, admission reason, disease severity, and age in hospitalized children.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of pediatric patients (≤18 years) hospitalized for COVID-19 from July 2021 to February 2022.
  • Disease severity assessed by length of stay, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) admission, and Remdesivir receipt.
  • Statistical analysis included chi-squared tests and Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel tests.

  • 492 pediatric hospitalizations were analyzed; more occurred during the Omicron period (n=307).

Conclusions:

  • Pediatric COVID-19 hospitalizations exhibited greater disease severity during the Delta variant predominance compared to Omicron.
  • Despite lower overall hospitalization rates, the Delta variant was associated with more severe illness in children.
  • Young children (<5 years) represent a vulnerable group for primary COVID-19 admissions across different variant waves.
