Undiagnosed depression affects nearly a fifth of type 2 diabetes patients in India, worsening health outcomes. Early detection and intervention are crucial for better diabetes management and preventing complications.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Psychiatry
- Public Health
Background:
- Diabetes mellitus is a growing health concern in India, affecting millions.
- Depression significantly impairs an individual's social, financial, and health well-being.
- Diabetes patients with depression often experience poorer health outcomes compared to those without depression.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the prevalence of undiagnosed depression in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
- To correlate the duration of T2DM and its associated complications with the presence of depression.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 224 T2DM patients visiting an OPD in South India.
- Participants were assessed using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS17) questionnaire.
- Data on sociodemographics, comorbidities, and clinical parameters were collected and analyzed for associations with depression.
Main Results:
- 22% (49 out of 224) of T2DM patients exhibited undiagnosed depression.
- Depression was significantly associated with older age (average 58 years), longer diabetes duration, and common T2DM complications (retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, heart disease).
Conclusions:
- A substantial proportion of T2DM patients suffer from undiagnosed depression.
- Timely diagnosis and intervention for depression in T2DM patients can improve prognosis and reduce further morbidity.
