Background:

  • Understanding the interplay between EF, sensorimotor development, and learning difficulties is vital for early identification and intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the predictive role of executive functions and sensorimotor skills in the development of learning difficulties in preschool children.
  • To compare the performance of children at risk for learning difficulties with typically developing children on EF and sensorimotor tasks.

Main Methods:

  • Ninety-five preschool children (5-7 years) participated, including 55 at risk for learning difficulties and 40 typically developing children.
  • Assessments included the Southern California Sensory Integration Test for sensorimotor skills (postural imitation, body midline crossing, bilateral motor coordination, standing balance) and tasks for executive functions (inhibition, cognitive flexibility, verbal working memory).

Main Results:

  • Children at risk for learning difficulties demonstrated significant impairments in sensorimotor skills and executive functions (inhibition, verbal working memory) compared to typically developing peers.
  • Binary logistic regression revealed that verbal working memory (OR = 0.91) and standing balance (OR = 0.86) were the strongest predictors of risk for learning difficulties.

Conclusions:

  • Both executive function and sensorimotor development are critical for school readiness.
  • Targeted support for verbal working memory and sensorimotor skills, particularly balance, may help mitigate risks associated with learning difficulties in early childhood.
