    Summary

Cervicocephalic arterial dissections, often extracranial, occurred in patients with acute cerebrovascular symptoms. Cerebral infarction was common, and while most patients survived, optimal management requires individualized treatment plans.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Vascular Surgery
    • Diagnostic Imaging

    Background:

    • Cervicocephalic arterial dissections are a significant cause of acute cerebrovascular events.
    • Diagnosis often occurs in patients presenting with acute neurological deficits.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report the incidence and characteristics of cervicocephalic arterial dissections.
    • To evaluate initial management strategies and outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of 4531 patients undergoing cerebral arteriography.
    • Diagnosis of cervicocephalic arterial dissections based on arteriographic findings.

    Main Results:

    • 19 cases of cervicocephalic arterial dissection were identified over a 10-year period.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Extracranial dissections were most common, with spontaneous and trauma-related cases occurring with similar frequency.
  • Cerebral infarction was the most frequent clinical presentation.
  • Most patients (13/19) were treated medically, while 6 underwent surgical intervention.
  • The majority of patients survived the acute event.
  • Conclusions:

    • Cervicocephalic arterial dissections present a diagnostic challenge in patients with acute cerebrovascular symptoms.
    • While most patients survive, optimal management strategies require further investigation.
    • Individualized treatment based on clinical, CT, and angiographic findings is recommended.
