  • The causal relationship between EF deficits and depression remains unclear due to limited prospective research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether self-reported executive function deficits prospectively predict the worsening of depressive symptoms.
  • To determine if executive function deficits contribute to the development or exacerbation of depression.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed executive function (shifting, inhibition, working memory) at Time 1 (T1) in participants with varying depression risk.
  • Measured depressive symptoms at T1 and Time 2 (T2).
  • Analyzed the prospective relationship between T1 EF and T2 depressive symptoms, controlling for baseline depression and rumination.

Main Results:

  • Poorer executive function at T1 prospectively predicted increased depressive symptoms at T2.
  • This predictive relationship was specific to working memory (WM) deficits.
  • Depressive symptoms at T1 did not prospectively predict changes in EF at T2.
  • T1 EF accounted for T2 depressive symptoms beyond baseline depression and T2 rumination.

Conclusions:

  • Executive function deficits, especially in working memory, play an active role in the onset, maintenance, and/or recurrence of depression.
  • Findings suggest a unidirectional causal link where EF deficits precede and contribute to depression.
  • Targeting EF deficits may be a viable strategy for depression prevention and treatment.
