Higher social tolerance is associated with more complex facial behavior in macaques

More socially complex macaque societies exhibit more complex facial communication. Tolerant crested macaques use a wider variety of facial behaviors than less tolerant Barbary and rhesus macaques, supporting the social complexity hypothesis.
