Background:

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) significantly impacts patient health, often presenting with snoring and apnea.
Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is a surgical intervention aimed at treating OSAS.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the effectiveness of UPPP in treating OSAS.
To analyze the postoperative morphometrical changes in the pharynx following UPPP.

Main Methods:

11 patients with OSAS underwent UPPP.
Pre- and postoperative assessments included CT scans, pharyngeal volume (PV), and cross-sectional area (CSA) measurements.
Six-category morphometrical analyses were conducted.

10 out of 11 patients experienced symptom improvement.
Postoperative pharyngeal volume (PV) and cross-sectional area (CSA) significantly increased.
Changes in PV correlated with improvements in the respiratory event index (REI).

Conclusions:

UPPP leads to pharyngeal widening and increased CSA, contributing to symptom relief.
Airway shape modification, alongside volume increase, is crucial for effective OSAS treatment post-UPPP.
The degree of symptom improvement is not solely dependent on pharyngeal volume changes.
