    Summary

Eye movement patterns correlate with the 48-hour manic-depressive cycle. These electrooculography (EOG) findings confirm mood state switches occur at a consistent time each night, regardless of sleep.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Chronobiology
    • Psychiatry

    Background:

    • Manic-depressive illness, also known as bipolar disorder, is characterized by cyclical mood states.
    • Understanding the biological underpinnings of these cycles is crucial for effective treatment.
    • Electrooculography (EOG) measures eye movements, which can reflect neurological and physiological states.
