The Hyperbolic Temperament Questionnaire (HTQ) shows good reliability and validity for assessing borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms in Iran. This short tool aids in quick BPD screening, saving time and costs.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
- Cross-cultural Psychology
Background:
- Borderline personality disorder (BPD) requires culturally sensitive assessment tools.
- Hyperbolic temperament is a key factor in understanding BPD.
- Validating assessment instruments across diverse populations is crucial for accurate diagnosis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Hyperbolic Temperament Questionnaire (HTQ) in Iranian populations.
- To confirm the construct, criterion, and discriminant validity of the HTQ.
- To adapt the HTQ for cross-cultural use in BPD research.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study involving 558 participants in Iran.
- Translation and administration of the 11-item HTQ (Farsi version).
- Factor analysis, correlation, and regression models were used to assess validity and reliability.
Main Results:
- The 11-item HTQ demonstrated a robust unidimensional structure.
- High internal consistency (α = 0.87–0.91) and acceptable reliability were found across samples.
- The HTQ showed expected correlations with related constructs, supporting criterion and discriminant validity, and was specifically linked to BPD symptoms.
Conclusions:
- The 11-item Farsi version of the HTQ is a reliable and valid measure for Iranian samples.
- The HTQ can be utilized for rapid screening of potential BPD cases.
- This tool can improve diagnostic efficiency and reduce costs in clinical settings.
