    Summary

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify the systemic absorption of epinephrine following inhalation from a pressurized aerosol.
    • To compare the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles of inhaled versus subcutaneously administered epinephrine.

    Main Methods:

    • Six healthy volunteers inhaled two doses of epinephrine aerosol (15 puffs and 30 puffs).
    • Plasma epinephrine levels were measured at various time points.
    • Physiological tremor, plasma potassium, and plasma glucose levels were monitored.
    • A subcutaneous injection of epinephrine was administered for comparison.

    Main Results:

    • Peak plasma epinephrine levels after inhalation were 1.50 nmol/L and 4.22 nmol/L after 15 and 30 puffs, respectively.
