Summary

Giant borderline ovarian tumors are rare ovarian masses over 10 cm. This case highlights a 35-cm infected mucinous tumor, successfully treated with surgery and antibiotics, showing favorable outcomes.

Background:

  • Gigantic borderline ovarian tumors are rare, defined by ovarian masses ≥10 cm.
  • These tumors can present with complications such as superinfection.
  • Infectious complications are uncommon and often mimic peritonitis.

Observation:

  • A 30-year-old woman presented with chronic abdominal pain and rapid abdominal enlargement.
  • Imaging revealed a large 27x12 cm abdominopelvic mass; tumoral markers were elevated.
  • During hospitalization, she developed fever, abdominal pain, and inflammatory syndrome, indicating infection.

Findings:

  • Surgical removal of a 35-cm infected mucinous borderline ovarian tumor was performed.
  • The patient received postoperative antibiotics and showed positive clinical and biological recovery.
  • Histopathology confirmed a borderline mucinous tumor with infectious signs.

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention are crucial for managing infected giant borderline ovarian tumors.
  • Combined treatment of antibiotics and surgical resection is effective.
  • This case underscores the importance of considering infection in large ovarian masses.
