  • The precise pathophysiological mechanisms linking FCon to these psychiatric symptoms are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate aberrant functional brain network alterations in patients with FCon compared to healthy controls.
  • To explore the relationship between brain network properties and clinical variables in FCon.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 35 FCon patients and 40 healthy controls (HC).
  • Utilized resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) with surface-based analysis (SBA) and graph theoretical analysis (GTA).
  • Analyzed functional connectivity (FC) within and between large-scale brain networks.

Main Results:

  • FCon patients showed altered global network topology, including increased clustering coefficient, local efficiency, and shortest path length, with decreased global efficiency.
  • Increased nodal efficiency was observed in the frontoparietal network (FPN) in FCon patients.
  • Significant functional connectivity alterations were found in visual, limbic, default mode, and somatosensory-motor networks.

Conclusions:

  • Altered functional brain network architecture in FCon impacts visual perception, emotion regulation, sensorimotor processing, and attentional control.
  • These findings suggest potential targets for novel therapeutic interventions in FCon.
