Summary

This study aimed to validate an autobiographical interview for older adults. The results indicated that most items did not meet validity criteria, suggesting revisions are needed for effective use in geriatric care.

Background:

Autobiographical memory interviews are crucial for understanding older adults' life experiences.
Developing validated tools is essential for person-centered care and assessing communicative competence in aging populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To validate a proposed autobiographical interview designed for typical older adults.
To assess the content validity, comprehensibility, and length of the interview protocol.

Main Methods:

A semi-structured interview protocol was developed.
Content validity was assessed using Lawshe's procedure with 14 Speech and Language Pathologist judges and 14 older adults.
Pilot interviews and data triangulation were employed for evaluation.

Main Results:

Out of 22 evaluated items, only 4 surpassed the critical reference value of 0.49.
The initial interview protocol requires significant revision to achieve content validity.

Conclusions:

The autobiographical interview needs refinement before implementation in clinical practice.
Future iterations should consider cultural diversity and digital technology integration.
Enhancing such tools supports respect, identity, and agency in older adults within a communicative competence framework.
