Summary

High sun exposure, especially intermittent exposure during warmer months, may reduce the risk of developing follicular lymphoma. This finding could offer new strategies for managing this challenging cancer.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between lifetime sun exposure patterns and follicular lymphoma risk.
  • To identify specific types and timings of sun exposure that may be protective.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based family case-control study in Australia involving 666 cases and 459 controls.
  • Participants provided detailed lifetime residence, work, and outdoor hour histories.
  • Group-based trajectory modeling and logistic regression were used to analyze sun exposure and lymphoma risk.

Main Results:

  • Increased time outdoors, particularly intermittent exposure on holidays and weekends during warmer months, was associated with a reduced risk of follicular lymphoma.
